IL BORGO GUADO DELL'ARCIDUCA

IL BORGO GUADO DELL'ARCIDUCA

THE CHARM OF A GREAT PAST

In Il Borgo Guado Dell’Arciduca nothing seems to have changed since 1755. The Villa Gorgo is enclosed by colonnades, two majestic Magnolias, which are situated at the entrance of the large garden, and the ancient hamlets, which are made of stone and brick. You can also see the bell tower and the church of Saint Andrea, with its small square, the road that widens for carriages to stop and the changing of horses. To conclude this composed and harmonious eighteenth-century scenography there is the facade of the Grande Scuderia, which is known for its architectural and pictorial importance and has no equal among other Venetian villas.

Nogaredo is located in the heart of Friuli, a few kilometers from Palmanova, the fortress city that did not suffer any attacks in its history, and it is close to the Torre River. It is a small border town, an obligatory point of transit from the territories of the Serenissima Republica of Venice to the Imperial ones.

The Customs, the Post Office, the Roman Ford are situated here, because this was the most convenient route between Venice and Vienna.

The memory of the passage of the Emperor of Austria Archduke Joseph II is preserved here.
He was the protector of Mozart, who stopped in Nogaredo on 11 March 1784, during the return from his long journey to Florence, Rome and Naples, visiting the kingdoms of his brothers. Leonardo Da Vinci contributed the areas defenses. He is a Renaissance Man who was also a brilliant hydraulic engineer. The Torre-Isonzo river system was a vulnerable border. In 1500 the Serenissima Repubblica sent Leonardo da Vinci to strengthen its defense.

Pope Pius VI returns the courtesy visit to the Archduke.

On March 14, 1782, Pope Pius VI Braschi was a guest of the Counts of Villa Gorgo. This took place during his journey to Vienna to meet the Emperor Joseph II.

"Apollo, protector of the Muses and inspiration of all art, abandoned his Delos to take refuge in the region beyond the Boreas, the cold wind of the north east known to us as Bora. This is why the inhabitants were known as the “Iperborei”. It is said that they populated this land with a pleasant and mild climate. The artists who lived here and enjoyed the protection of the Nume were also called by the same name."

Villa Gorgo is the heart of the Archduke’s Ford. It is a Historic Villa, elegant and harmonious. It was built in 1755 and it is located in the center of the two hamlets, Borgo dell’Argine and Borgo di Sant’Andrea.

It retains the large tripartite facade with the Hall of Honor, whose frescoes and imposing double external staircases have been renovated. The staircases are crowned by two gigantic magnolias, and it gives access from the garden to the hall.

The two Barchesse (Colonnades) della Villa encase the Garden of Honor; they have been restored and have rooms that are dedicated to cultural and artistic events.

The Grande Scuderia (Stable), which was completely restored, maintains the structural characteristics of the time with a touch of modernity that makes the environment unique and also suitable for hosting events.
